If you’ve ever visited Fountains Abbey, you’ll know just how beautiful both the ruins and the surrounding parkland are. It’s no secret we love it, and it seems we’re not the only ones. The Yorkshire heritage site is often ranked among the best places to visit in the UK, including recognition from Which?.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site combines ancient abbey ruins with an awe-inspiring water garden and deer park, creating a landscape full of history, curiosity and breathtaking views. It brings together two distinct periods, where medieval architecture meets 18th-century design in a truly unique setting. The abbey itself is one of the largest and best-preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England, with vaulted ceilings, grand columns, and an imposing tower still standing.
The gardens at Studley Royal Water Garden are among the finest examples of a Georgian water garden in the country. Ornamental lakes, canals, temples and cascades create a series of striking vistas, while the surrounding parkland is home to more than 300 red, sika and fallow deer. Within the grounds sits St Mary’s Church, a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture designed by William Burges.

On our visit, we loved pottering around the grounds with our pooch, taking in the stunning ruins and picture-perfect gardens. The best thing about the gardens is that you get something different every time of year you visit, and spring and summer are surely the best times to go.
Founded in 1132, the site was home to monks for around 400 years before falling into ruin following the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. Today, it stands as one of the most impressive historic attractions in the country.

As well as its rich history, the site is celebrated for its peaceful atmosphere and scenic walking routes. It has been praised for its calm surroundings and sense of space, with visitors highlighting how well the experience matches expectations, alongside strong ratings for value for money and facilities.
There is a range of events that take place across the year, so make sure that you check the website before you visit.
