A Yorkshire restaurant has been crowned the best in the region after receiving top honours from the Good Food Guide. Black Wheat Club has been named Best Restaurant in Yorkshire & the North East in the Good Food Guide’s latest awards, while also securing 10th place in the publication’s list of the Top 100 Best Local Restaurants in the UK.
Located on Fossgate in York city centre, the accolade came as a surprise to the Black Wheat Club restaurant’s founders, who admitted they were still “trying to get our heads around it” after learning of the recognition. Known for its understated approach, the team said the restaurant has never been focused on collecting awards, instead prioritising creating a place where people genuinely enjoy spending time.
The restaurant has earned a reputation for its modern British cooking, with menus that celebrate seasonal ingredients sourced from local farmers, growers and producers. Combining refined dishes with a relaxed, neighbourhood atmosphere, Black Wheat Club focuses on quality, hospitality and showcasing the best of Yorkshire’s produce, making it one of the city’s most highly regarded dining destinations.
In a message shared following the announcement, the owners said they would “much rather be in service than in front of a camera”, highlighting the day-to-day work that goes into running the restaurant.
The team also stressed that the achievement belonged to everyone involved in Black Wheat Club’s success, from chefs and front-of-house staff to bakers, kitchen porters, suppliers and local producers. They said the award reflected the dedication, personality and hard work of the entire team, as well as the support of those who have helped the restaurant grow.
Perhaps the most meaningful part of the recognition, they added, was discovering how many customers had nominated Black Wheat Club for the award.
According to the restaurant, the Good Food Guide revealed that a large number of diners had put the venue forward, leaving thoughtful comments about memorable visits and the small details that had stayed with them long after their meals.
The owners described those nominations as “probably the greatest compliment we could receive”, saying they served as a reminder of why they opened the restaurant in the first place.
