You cannot beat a burger. Smash patties, classic pub burgers, or charred summer BBQ burgers – we just love them. So, when we saw that one of Yorkshire’s top spots had been featured in a list of the best, and it’s one we’ve tried, we knew we had to shout about it. And shout we will.
The Good Food Guide, a publication offering a definitive guide to restaurants, pubs, and eateries across the UK, has put together 18 of its top spots for an excellent burger – and one North Yorkshire venue made the cut. We agree that burgers are having their moment. Although they’ve always been a menu staple, we’ve never seen such variety in our lifetime.
As one of the UK’s top guides, the list showcases everything from succulent towers of fried chicken to frilly-edged smash burgers and rare-breed beef patties – and we are 100% here for it. One of our favourite gastropub classics is a well-made burger.
So, which tasty burger featured in the list? None other than the North Yorkshire pub The Abbey Inn, Byland, one of Michelin-star chef Tommy Banks’ establishments. Sitting beneath the stunning Gothic remains of Byland Abbey, the inn has all the charm of a traditional pub, and the food offering is second to none.

The iconic Byland Burger is out of this world, hailed as the ultimate burger by the late Dave Myers – the highest accolade in our opinion. The burger features an Oldstead Dexter beef patty, Baron Bigod, bacon, and chicory root jam, served with a side of pork-fat fries. The Good Food Guide comments how the ‘food also makes a connection to the Banks family farm (without labouring the point)’.
The pub celebrated Burger Day in style earlier this year with the above: Captioned “we’ve got a rich brie-style Baron Bigod, bringing indulgent creaminess to our salt-aged, pasture-fed Dexter beef patties. Stacked high with the best of Oldstead produce, it includes homemade gherkins lightly misted with homemade ponzu, crisp lettuce and bacon jam laced with chicory powder.” We are drooling at the sight of it.
It’s also worth noting that Hull’s Social Distortion made the list. Although the venue is currently closed while its future is decided, we are disappointed we haven’t tried it. If it’s as good as previous meals we’ve had, it certainly deserves a spot, as its chef is one of the most exciting culinary talents we’ve come across in Yorkshire.
