The sunshine is out and as if by magic the people of the UK want to be out and about. And, when the sun is shining there is only one place Brits want to be, the beach! As someone who has lived by the seaside all my life, I can attest that this is true as the ring road around our town has become a car park for the summer. Not that I’m complaining as we get to experience it all year round.
And, one Yorkshire seaside town has been selected to be in this year’s best seaside town list by the experts at Lonely Planet travel magazine. The dramatic North Yorkshire coastal town of Whitby is popular with tourists and locals alike. It’s Gothic heritage and old-fashioned seaside charm has the masses flocking each summer.

Located on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, Whitby featured amongst eight other UK seaside towns and was praised for its quaint charm, abbey and of course the iconic Magpie Cafe for fish and chips (yes, I know Trenchers is great too).
Whitby featured second in the list (although not sure if it’s a ranking situation, or just naming some of the top recommendations in a random order). Lonely Planet highlighted the Whitby Abbey overlooking the town as a real highlight.
You can’t mention Whitby without reference to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which was inspired by the town’s appearance and tales of witchcraft. The travel magazine recommends taking a ghost walk, seeing a mummified human hand in the Whitby Museum or visiting the Dracula Experience to get your kicks for all things creepy in this unique seaside town.
Adding to this, we’d recommend heading up the 199 Steps, and visiting the Whitby Brewery whilst you’re up there. Humble Pie n’ Mash is always great and if you like your fish the Fortune’s Kippers has been trading from the same premises for over 150 years and has been in the family for five generations.
