Why Is This Remote Yorkshire Pub So Famous? And Why You Need to Visit

There are many fantastic pubs across our county, and one of our favourite pastimes for us Yorkshire folk is enjoying a cracking ale with good company. Certain pubs earn a real name for themselves, whether for a great beer garden, an excellent choice of ales, quirky decor, a lively atmosphere, or a beautiful location. However, there is one Yorkshire pub that is arguably the most talked about of the lot – The Tan Hill Inn.

A Record-Breaking Pub in the Wilds of the Yorkshire Countryside

So, why is this remote, 17th-century pub in Reeth, North Yorkshire so famous? Well, first of all, it holds the record for being Britain’s highest public house, standing at 1,732 feet above sea level. The pub has battled the elements over the years and continues to survive snow drifts, ice storms, and high winds. Its dramatic and picturesque setting makes it a must-visit place for road-trippers, cyclists, hikers, and stargazers from across the UK and internationally.

Those who brave the trip are greeted by a friendly Yorkshire welcome and an incredibly cosy pub. They have a roaring fire, offer great food such as pies, ploughman’s lunch, and roast dinners in giant Yorkshire puddings. Tired after your long journey? Well, you can stop the night in their ensuite rooms or book a pitch and go wild camping.

Snow Storms, Oasis Tribute Bands, and Famous Faces

The Tan Hill Inn hit the headlines in November 2021 when around 60 people, including an Oasis tribute band called ‘Noasis’, spent three days trapped in the pub. Storm Arwen struck the pub, leaving punters completely snowed in. Rather than cursing their luck, they made light of the situation and had a lock-in with board games, pub quizzes, and karaoke (plenty of Oasis, we suspect!). Following the incident, Noasis were dubbed #Snowasis on Twitter (now X).

Adding to its star power, the pub has been frequented by many celebrities and has been used as a filming location for shows such as Top Gear and Vera. A few of the famous faces who have visited over the years include:

  • Timothy Dalton
  • Toby Jones
  • Natalie Imbruglia
  • Alan Bennett
  • Griff Rhys Jones
  • Clive Owen
  • Chris Moyles
  • Rishi Sunak

There are so many reasons why people keep visiting the Tan Hill Inn time and time again. Its wild and stunning location, wonderful food and drink, the chance to see a famous face, and being part of Yorkshire’s history – the list goes on. So, why don’t you see what all the fuss is about? Visit the Tan Hill Inn on your next trip and make memories at the county’s most famous pub.
