Yorkshire Stately Home Named Among 20 Buildings You Must See In Your Lifetime

Yorkshire is home to some truly stunning architecture. Its stunning abbeys, minsters, stately homes and more showcase just how creative we can be, and prove that you don’t need to travel abroad to see some incredible historic buildings. And The Telegraph agrees, having named one of Yorkshire’s stately homes in its list of 20 buildings you must see in your lifetime.

The Yorkshire building features on a list alongside the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, the Pantheon in Rome and Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Castle Howard, which can be found near York, is the only UK stately home featured and sits alongside Ely Cathedral as one of only two British places on the list.

We love Castle Howard, especially its Christmas event, which takes place each year and transforms the stately home into a magical festive space, with a different theme each year. This year’s theme is A Dickens of a Christmas at Castle Howard, featuring a Victorian carriage made by Barker & Co of Chandos Street in 1879 for Rosalind, the 9th Countess of Carlisle.

The Telegraph writer Nicholas Boys Smith highlights that “No building could be less typical of the dour Yorkshire temperament.” And we’d have to agree. It’s an absolute masterpiece, with its dramatic Baroque architecture, stunning interiors and beautiful dome.

Work began on the stately home back in 1699, commissioned by the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, who tasked Sir John Vanbrugh, alongside architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, with creating what is now one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable landmarks.

More than 300 years later, Castle Howard remains one of the county’s most spectacular buildings and a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates history, architecture and beautiful surroundings.
