Fancy celebrating Christmas in Yorkshire this year? Well, get ready to go full steam ahead into the magic of the season with an opportunity to step back in time and go on a journey to one of the UK’s most famous festive markets.
On Monday 16th November, Steam Dreams is giving you the chance to take a traditional steam train from London’s King’s Cross and travel along the iconic East Coast Main Line. There are additional pick-ups in Potters Bar, Hatfield, Huntingdon and Peterborough. En route, you will pass Stoke Bank, where in 1938, the 4468 Mallard set the world speed record for a steam locomotive. The route then continues through Grantham and Doncaster before arriving in the historic city of York.

It becomes a winter wonderland as the medieval streets come alive with Christmas trees, bright lights, plenty of fun and laughter, and of course, the famous market. At the Christmas market, you can explore more than 75 beautiful alpine chalets lining the streets. You will discover an array of seasonal food and drink, local crafts, artisan products, and so much more. With more than 80% of the traders based in Yorkshire, it is very much a seasonal celebration of the wonderful businesses and makers across our great region.
As well as the market, there is so much more to see. You can visit the Shambles and feel as though you are stepping into Diagon Alley, admire the stunning York Minster decorated for the season, or browse the many independent shops, boutiques, and bars lining the cobbled streets. To add to the magic, carol singers, street performers and seasonal displays all help create a memorable Christmas experience.
After you’ve taken in the sights and sounds of the city, bought some Christmas presents, and undoubtedly, eaten lots of treats and drunk lashings of mulled wine, the steam train will return homeward towards London King’s Cross. You’ll step off that train full of Christmas cheer and with plenty of happy memories from your Yorkshire adventure.
