The leaves are starting to brown and fall to the ground littering the cobbled streets of one of our favourite and most charming autumn villages in Yorkshire. There’s that little nip of cold in the mornings and dark nights are creeping ever closer – and we are all for it. Autumn is our favourite time of year to slow down and enjoy the breathtaking display of colours. Many quaint villages are starting to look so warm and welcoming, and there’s one for us, that stands out above the rest.
Yorkshire’s number one autumn village
Haworth with its cobbled old-fashioned main street lined with independent shops, cafes, pubs and book shops all looking even more atmospheric thanks to the warm lights and fallen leaves. We have a few favourite places we like to visit this time of year that are synonymous with autumn.
Firstly, once you’ve made your way up the steep cobbled street and got your breath back, you will want to visit the most iconic autumnal shop that has become the most photographed in the tiny village, The Curiosity Society, an old apothecary, is home to fantastic smelling bath salts, soaps, perfumes and of course a beautiful book section (it is Bronte country after all).
Once you’ve enjoyed that you may want to head for a hot chocolate and a spot of lunch. We’d highly recommend, the Old Post Office, that serves up delicious hot chocolates as well as some tasty lunch treats and stronger stuff in the form of a few bevvies and cocktails. The espresso martini is especially picturesque. Other highlights include the sweetshop and the microbrewery Haworth Steam Brewery.
It’s not an autumnal trip to Haworth without heading out on the wild and windy moors that inspired Wuthering Heights where you can head up to Top Withens and the Brontë Waterfall and Bridge.
Bronte Parsonage
Getting stuck into a good book by the fire is what autumn is all about. And, this tiny village is home to the iconic Bronte family, literary iconcs Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë. you can head to the parsonage where they grew up and learn all about these sisterss who were nispired by the windy moors.
Contiuing the old fashioned autumn escape, head onto the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway steam train experience – with heritage trains travelling through the Worth Valley.
There you have it, Haworth is the perfect autumn escape, with crunching leaves, smoky fireplaces and windswept hills as well as a nice hot drink with a good bok. All boxes ticked for a classic British autumn day out.
