Aerial Displays From Spitfire,Hurricane & More Announced For Armed Forces Day In Scarborough

The North Yorkshire seaside town of Scarborough is set for an exciting weekend full of adrenaline-fueled action this month as it welcomes all those involved with the armed forces to celebrate all they do for us putting their lives on the line. The Yorkshire Coast town is showing support for the men and women of the Armed Forces community including serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets.

Armed Forces Day in Scarborough is set to take place on 28th June, starting at 11am and running through until 5pm. Hosted by the North Yorkshire Council it’s quickly become one of the biggest events in Scarborough’s calendar.

One of the main attractions this year is a replica of an MK1 Spitfire an aircraft that featured in the Battle of Britain, which is being constructed to the design and dimensions of the original, created by local arts organisation, Animated Objects.

North Yorkshire Council’s leader, Cllr Carl Les, said: “We should rightly recognise the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces personnel and their families, and nowhere more so than in North Yorkshire. Armed Forces Day provides us with both an opportunity to look back and pay tribute to those who gave their lives to defend the freedoms we all enjoy on a daily basis, but also enables us to show gratitude for the roles our soldiers, sailors and airmen are currently playing around the world to keep people safe.”

The artistic director of Animated Objects, Lee Threadgold, said: “The Spitfire is by far one of the most ambitious projects we’ve ever undertaken. It’s such a landmark piece of engineering and aviation history that people recognise every curve and facet of the aircraft at first sight and it’s our job to ensure we recreate that faithfully for visitors to the Armed Forces Day event in Scarborough.”

There will be flypasts on the day with the Royal Air Force sending the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, featuring the Dakota, Hurricane and Spitfire. which will make up part of five displays with military connections.

The director of R5 Air Displays Ltd, Charles Skiera, said this year “will be particularly poignant in this, the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, with the sounds of the Merlin engines echoing around the South Bay.”

There will also be A full-scale replica of the 16th century Spanish galleon, Nao Victoria open for visitors during Armed Forces Day. The ship was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe more than 500 years ago. You’ll be able to find it moored at North Wharf Quay.
