Us Yorkshire folk love a good ol’ chippy takeaway. Chippy tea on Friday was the law in our house. My order is always a portion of fish & chips with a side of curry sauce and, of course, a can of dandelion & burdock or a shandy! And after the National Fish and Chips Awards 2026, it has named its top 10 best chippies in the whole of the UK. We’ve added the four chip shops in Yorkshire featured in the list to our bucket list.
The annual chippy award, which is organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) has revealed its top 10 shortlist for 2026. The list has been whittled down from hundreds, down to just 20 and now 10, by expert judges.
Up against other counties such as Durham, London, Essex and Aberdeenshire, Yorkshire has three chippies featured in the shortlist. That’s right. Yorkshire, which has the best fish & chips in the country, if you ask us, has four fish & chip shops featured in the list.
We’ve not actually tried any of these chip shops featured in the list, but have heard fantastic things, especially about The Scrap Box, which sits just outside of York in North Yorkshire. The Fish Bank always features in these lists, and we are surprised we’ve managed to stay away for this long.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said: “Fish and chips is a national treasure, and the skill, passion, resilience and desire to serve communities with the best food shown by the takeaways we’ve announced today is a great representation of what makes our industry so special. We can’t wait to reveal the winner in a few months’ time.:

If you’d like to follow their journey, the overall winner will be announced at a ceremony at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on February 25th 2026.
