Those winter temperatures are well and truly on their way. It’s been big coat weather and we’ve been reaching for the thermostat (I know, in November!). One benefit of the dark nights are the beautiful starry skies and tonight you going to be able to see a full Beaver Moon.

The full Beaver Moon will be visible in the night sky tonight (November 27th) from late afternoon into the evenings. It marks the last full moon before Christmas and the penultimate of 2023. The name is said to come from the time of year when beavers retired to their dens for winter.

Also, Native American tribes called the November full moon, Beaver Moon because this is when they would set beaver traps before the swamps froze to ensure they had warm winter furs. It is alternatively known as a Frost Moon, which is quite fitting for the weather at the minute.

“Full Moons always occur when the Moon is on the opposite side of the sky to the Sun, and it is fully illuminated by sunshine – which is where the name ‘full Moon’ originates.”

The customary weather conditions in the northern regions might impede a clear view of the full Beaver Moon in the sky due to cloud cover. Nevertheless, there’s a chance we could still witness this remarkable celestial display during intermittent breaks.

Beaver Moons occur in November, and the next one is not anticipated until approximately the same time next year. Be sure to glance upward and seize the opportunity to witness this celestial event!
