The magical Skelf Island is accessed in Bridge to Terabithia style by a rope bridge over a lagoon. When you cross the treacherous bridge you are greeted by a secret world on the water at Castel Howard that has been inhabited by Skleves for centuries.
Keep a look out for the Skelf’s homes as you cross the bridge. Once inside you can enjoy a wonderland world made up of treetop structures all connected by rope bridges slides and nets along with a zip wire for a quick getaway.
Found on the historic Castle Howard site Skelf Island is inhabited by Skelve which are fairie-like creatures that live in the canopies and crooks of SKelf Island. They’re creatures that love to play that you may come across in the school holidays.
The area is built so adults are able to access play equipment and enjoy the experience with their kids. The tree tops are accessible to all and there is no age limit. Although it’s not wheelchair accessible, there are additional play equipment for wheelchair users including wheelchair-accessible swings and pathways.
Once your children have worn themselves out you can with the Boathouse Cafe near Skelf Island to recharge your batteries and refuel with a coffee and some food along with juices for the kids.
Skelf Island is included in the gardens ticket which costs £12.95 per adult and £8.50 per child aged 4-16 with under 4’s getting in free.
