Renowned Yorkshire artist David Hockney is launching a nationwide drawing competition for Bradford City of Culture. The event is just one of many announced for Bradford’s tenure as the UK’s City of Culture 2025. Alongside the drawing other events named include, an outdoor theatrical event created by Steven Frayne, the magician formerly known as Dynamo, the Turner Prize, tributes to the Brontes and an adaptation of The Railway Children
Other musical events include celebrations of brass bands and South Asian music. Literature will also play a big part in the year’s events, Bradford is planning a series of tributes to the Brontë sisters.
Dynamo, the magician, who rose to fame back in the naughties, will perform his new show Rise, which is based on the story of his grandfather teaching him magic tricks in the city.
Shanaz Gulzar, creative director of Bradford 2025, said in a statement: “The UK is invited to Bradford in 2025. Not only will audiences want to be celebrating everything that makes Bradford great, but it’ll also be a part of the change for this vibrant city and district.”
He continued saying the line-up would “showcase the exceptionally rich, diverse talent of the West Yorkshire city. We’re young, we’re diverse, we’re creative, and we’re the heart of the UK.”
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, said of the programme, “This celebration of talent born and bred in the city will help to get more people of all ages and backgrounds involved in cultural events, creating good jobs and opportunities for young people.”
Bradford City of Culture 2025 will kick off in January. Events and performances take place across the city towns, and villages as well as green spaces across the district.
