We love a bit of Sean Bean, so we are very excited about his newest BBC drama, This City Is Ours, whose first-look images were released last week. Starring Yorkshire’s very own Sean Bean and written by Stephen Butchard, known for The Good Mothers and The Last Kingdom, the eight-part series is set and filmed in Liverpool and promises a gripping story of crime, loyalty, and love.
Directed by Saul Dibb and John Hayes and produced by Left Bank Pictures, the series boasts an impressive cast, including James Nelson-Joyce, Hannah Onslow, Jack McMullen, Kevin Harvey, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Stephen Walters, and more.
The story follows Michael (James Nelson-Joyce) and Diana (Hannah Onslow), whose love affair unfolds against the backdrop of Michael’s crumbling crime gang. As Ronnie hints at retirement, Michael also starts to envision a different life. For the first time, he is in love. For the first time, he sees beyond the day-to-day—he sees a future. Something to win and something to lose: Diana.

The This City Is Ours ensemble includes two-time BAFTA award-winner Sean Bean as gang leader The series stars Sean Bean as Ronnie Phelan, alongside James Nelson-Joyce as his friend Michael Kavanagh, Hannah Onslow (Empire of Light, This Is Going to Hurt) as Michael’s partner Diana Williams, Jack McMullen (Hijack, Ford v Ferrari) as Ronnie’s son Jamie Phelan, and Julie Graham (Shetland, Time) as Elaine, the formidable head of the Phelan family alongside her husband, Ronnie.
At its core, This City Is Ours is a story about family and love—both destroyed and corrupted by ambition, pride, and greed. It explores the pursuit of power and the lengths people will go to secure and maintain it. When Ronnie’s son, Jamie, sets his sights on inheriting the family empire, Michael suddenly finds himself without a place in their world. As both men battle to modernise the gang on their own terms, tensions escalate into a struggle for control. But for Michael, the greatest fight of all will be to protect the woman he loves and the child he has always dreamed of having.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, says: “It’s a joy to see cameras rolling on This City Is Ours with a glorious cast who have made Stephen Butchard’s sublime scripts even more exciting. Under the skillful direction of Saul Dibb, BBC viewers are in for one hell of a ride.”

Andy Harries, CEO of Left Bank Pictures and Executive Producer, adds: “Stephen Butchard is a master storyteller, and his scripts are sharp, fast-paced, and brilliantly observed. He throws us in at the deep end with fascinating, multi-faceted characters, and we have put together a top-tier cast to bring them to life. This City Is Ours is going to blow the bloody doors off.”
We aren’t sure of a release date, but it hopefully won’t be too long a wait until it arrives on BBC and iPlayer
