Matthew Lewis is best known for his role as Neville Longbottom, the loyal friend of Harry Potter, in the globally renowned Harry Potter franchise. However, he’ll be putting down the wand for his role in an exciting new Channel 5 thriller.
Channel 5 recently announced on Instagram that Harry Potter star Matthew Lewis will headline the brand-new murder mystery drama series Murder Before Evensong. The series is based on the debut novel & Sunday Times No1 bestseller by Reverend Richard Coles, who recently appeared in ITV’s I’m A Celeb… and tackled the iconic cyclone challenge.
The promotional poster revealed that Matthew will play Canon Daniel Clement, who resides at Champton Rectory with his outspoken mother, Audrey. According to the synopsis: “When Daniel announces a plan to install a lavatory in the church, the parish is suddenly (and unexpectedly) divided. As lines are drawn and long-buried secrets threaten the village’s apparent calm, events take a deadly turn.”
Matthew Lewis is no stranger to television, having previously appeared in the first series of All Creatures Great and Small, where he played Hugh Hulton, Herriot’s rival for Helen’s affection.
In a statement reported by Deadline, Lewis expressed his enthusiasm for the role, saying:
*”I’m beyond thrilled to be throwing on the old dog collar and diving into the world of Champton so charmingly created by Rev. Richard Coles. I’ve been an admirer of his work for some time and love the characters and stories he’s written.
“It’s an honour to work with this creative team and have the opportunity to bring the character of Canon Clement to life for fans of the book and new viewers alike.”*
Filming is set to begin in the West Midlands, supported by the West Midlands Production Fund. The series is a collaboration between Acorn and Channel 5 and is expected to premiere later this year.
