A new crime drama based on the Yorkshire Ripper is being filmed across Yorkshire. The six-part ITV drama The Long Shadow is about the murders of the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe.

Directed by Lewis Arnold, who is known for popular shows Broadchurch and Sherwood, the drama is based on the police investigation into the murders.

Filming has been taking place across a range of locations such as in and around Wortley, in Granny Lane, The Highfields, Leysholmes and the Western Flatts Cliff Park. The series, which was commissioned by ITV, will highlight the hideous crimes of serial killer Peter Sutcliffe documenting the police hunt for the killer.

Along with Wortley, crews have been spotted in Langford Lane in Burley-in-Wharfedale in the Ilkley area of West Yorkshire.

Sutcliffe’s arrest took five years with around 1,000 police officers involved in the case, which saw 13 women lose their lives to the serial killer – along with seven attempts on others, each crime taking place between 1975 and 1980. The serial killer died back in November 2020.

The ITV series will feature popular actress Katherine Kelly known for Gentleman Jack and Coronation Street, and will play victim Emily Jackson. Charley Webb from Emmerdale will also star.
