Happy Valley’s Siobhan Finneran Leads New ITV Thriller Alongside Katherine Kelly

Siobhan Finneran from BBC drama Happy Valley is set to front new ITV thriller Protection inspired by ‘first-hand experiences’ of a witness protection officer.

Finneran will play DI Liz Nyles, who’s at the centre of a security breach that is set to be pinned on her when it emerges she’s been having an affair with a colleague.

Making it her mission to redeem herself, DI Nyles set to restore the security of her protection witnesses, some of whom are morally questionable characters themselves.

Alongisde Siobhan Finneran, Katherine Kelly from The Long Shadow, which has just aired on ITV and Nadine Marshall from Champion leading roles in Protection.

From the creator of White House Farm, the new ITV thriller delves into the world of witness protection from the perpesctive of Finneran’s character, a compromised police officer.

The ITV thriller Protection from Kris Mrska is inspired by first-hand experiences of a long-serving witness protection officer.

Discussing the new show, Mrksa says: “Protection is a suspenseful conspiracy thriller, but it also explores some complex moral questions, about how far we should be prepared to go in order to serve the greater good.

“The murky world of witness protection, where hardened criminals are often sheltered, in the hope that they will help bring down other criminals, provides the perfect context for examining these thorny issues.

“I’m incredibly excited to be working with the team at New Pictures again, in bringing this complex world to life.”

Polly Hill, ITV’s head of drama, added: “The clandestine world of witness protection creates a thrilling backdrop for this intriguing crime thriller written brilliantly by Kris Mrska.

“We’ve attracted an amazing cast including Siobhan Finneran, Nadine Marshall and Katherine Kelly, and I’m delighted to commission the series from Willow Grylls and her team at New Pictures.”

Filming is currently taking place from ITV thriller Protection in Liverpool with directors Simen Alsvik and Sasha Ransome at the helm.

Other cast members include Barry Ward from Bad Sisters, Chaneil Kular from Sex Education, David Hayman from Sid and Nancy, Nichola Burley from The Gold and Akiya Henry from Silent Witness.

The premier date looks set for next year.
