Like, what did I do before Instagram Reels? These tranquil hideaways let you get back to basics—whether that’s cooking over an open fire with no phone signal or relaxing in a wood-fired hot tub under a starry night sky.
These nature escapes are destinations in their own right, with hikes and wildlife on your doorstep and no need to step into a car. One thing they all have in common is that The Yorkshireman would visit them again and again. Each spot has its own unique sense of place, with thoughtful touches that will inspire and invigorate you.
1. Rest + Wild

Looking out over the beautiful Wensleydale Valley, hidden within a quiet pine forest, this is one of our favourite eco-friendly retreats we’ve completely fallen in love with. With no phone signal, the only option is to truly switch off and get lost in your surroundings, taking full advantage of the stunning views on offer. It’s easily one of our favourite off-grid stays in Yorkshire.
One of the things I loved most was the thoughtfully chosen selection of books left in the cabin. Sitting on the comfy king-size bed, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, reading about trees felt like a real treat. The cabin itself is unbelievably cosy, with panelled redwood interiors that make it feel warm and inviting the moment you step inside. You can enjoy an outdoor bath while soaking up the breathtaking views, or cook over the outdoor firepit for a truly outdoorsy experience. Sitting out early morning with a mist in the air, the fire crackling and the bacon sizzling in the pan was paradise. With wild walks on your doorstep and the chance to go wild swimming at Catrigg Force nearby, this has to be one of our favourite cabin stays and nature escapes we’ve ever done. If you’re looking to reset, recharge, and reconnect with yourself.

Nestled on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Swinton Bivouac in North Yorkshire sits within the shelter of the Druid’s Temple plantation, offering hard-to-beat views and beautiful scenery. The Swinton Estate is vast, with plenty of hiking and cycling trails to explore. Blowing out the cobwebs and getting back to basics has never been easier, thanks to the beautifully rustic accommodation, complete with wood-fired hot tubs and a woodland sauna.
The tree lodges leave little to be desired, delivering a truly authentic, back-to-nature escape. There’s nothing more grounding than an electricity-free, candlelit stay that encourages you to reconnect with yourself and those around you. From tending the log-burning stove as it warms the lodge, to cooking with a rustic simplicity, the experience feels refreshingly stripped back. Unwinding in your own log-fired hot tub, surrounded by woodland, is the perfect way to slow down and switch off.

4. The Lazy T

One of the most popular off-grid stays in Yorkshire, The Lazy T is a luxury glamping experience, owner-built in the North York Moors near the picturesque market town of Helmsley. Each off-grid cabin is constructed using timber from the surrounding woodland, employing low-impact building methods throughout. Arrive via a babbling stream into peaceful woodland, where a wood burner waits to be lit and the outside world instantly fades away. Bliss follows as you sit beneath vast night skies in the heart of the Dark Sky Reserve — a place to slow down and let nature quiet a busy mind.
The secluded valley in which the cabins sit is rich with native wildflowers, birdsong and wildlife. Settle in, surrounded by trees, and wait by the fire as the sun dips below the horizon and the night sky comes alive. When it comes to reconnecting with nature, it doesn’t get much better than this.
