Autumn is in full swing, with the leaves on the trees filling our view with shades of brown, gold and yellow, while fallen leaves litter the ground and crunch beneath our feet. It’s the time of year when we think some places look at their most beautiful. And one place we love to visit at this time of year is Knaresborough, a Yorkshire market town with so much character that is only enhanced by the changing seasons.
Autumn, for us, is all about walks and cosy pubs, and with all the history and stunning architecture this market town has to offer, it’s hardly surprising that we love it as a destination. It’s home to fantastic independent shops, restaurants and pubs, all of which look particularly photogenic at this time of year. That’s not to mention the stunning railway viaduct that strides across the River Nidd, creating one of the town’s most recognisable views.
Dating back to medieval times, Knaresborough is one of Yorkshire’s prettiest market towns, thanks in part to its unique position overlooking the beautiful River Nidd. The town has everything a visitor could want, from traditional pubs and a quaint town centre to independent shops and little cafés to explore during a day out.
The view from Knaresborough Castle is particularly impressive in autumn, with the surrounding trees bursting into seasonal colour and the River Nidd winding its way through the valley below. It’s also a lovely time to wander through the maze of historic streets, discover hidden corners and explore the stone staircases that make the town such an interesting place to explore on foot.

There are plenty of things to do in Knaresborough, whether you’re looking for a scenic walk, a spot of shopping or somewhere to stop for a leisurely lunch.
The surrounding area has plenty to offer, too. Just upstream from the town, Nidd Gorge is a beautiful wooded landscape that looks particularly magical during autumn. Rich in wildlife, its walking trails follow the winding course of the River Nidd, offering the chance to escape the bustle of the town and immerse yourself in the changing colours of the countryside.
It’s the sort of place where you can spend a few hours walking beneath the trees, listening to the leaves rustle underfoot and enjoying the peaceful surroundings before heading back into town for a warming drink.
Another of Knaresborough’s best-known attractions is Mother Shipton’s Cave and the nearby Petrifying Well. Open to visitors since 1630, the attraction is steeped in local folklore and is associated with the legendary prophetess Mother Shipton, who is said to have been born in the cave.
The Petrifying Well is particularly unusual, as its mineral-rich water gradually coats objects in a stony layer. It’s a fascinating place to visit if you fancy discovering something a little different while exploring the area. Do check seasonal opening dates and times before travelling.
Cosy pubs and riverside views

After a long autumn walk, there’s nothing better than finding a cosy pub to settle into, and Knaresborough has plenty of characterful places to choose from. Nearby, Mother Shipton’s Inn is a traditional pub that makes a tempting stop after exploring the surrounding attractions, offering the sort of welcoming atmosphere that feels especially appealing as the weather turns colder. The Track & Sleeper at the railway is a stunning station pub to visit and one we’ve had on our list for a while that seems exciting is Blind Jack’s, a traditional alehouse, set in a Grade II listed building on Knaresborough’s Market Place, has long been a favourite for both locals and visitors.
Back in town, the riverside setting provides another reason to linger. Whether you’re enjoying a drink, taking photographs or simply watching the river flow beneath the historic buildings, Knaresborough has plenty of spots where you can slow down and enjoy the scenery.
A romantic autumn escape

Romantic, huh? Standing beside the River Nidd, you can’t help but be inspired by the 78-foot arches of the railway viaduct as they carry trains across the gorge. The viaduct is arguably Knaresborough’s most distinctive landmark, adding to the old-world charm that makes the town feel as though it belongs in a 19th-century romance novel.
The combination of the historic architecture, the river below and the golden autumn foliage makes it a particularly lovely place to visit at this time of year. It’s easy to see why photographers and visitors are drawn to this view, especially when the trees are at their most colourful.
The town is a popular tourist destination, but we think autumn is an especially wonderful time to discover it. As the seasons change, Knaresborough takes on a different character, inviting visitors to wrap up warm, browse the independent shops, enjoy the Wednesday market and take their time exploring everything on the doorstep.
From peaceful woodland walks and historic attractions to cosy pubs and beautiful riverside views, there’s plenty to enjoy without having to travel far. So, if you’re looking for somewhere to spend an autumn day in Yorkshire, Knaresborough deserves a place on your list.
