It’s no wonder we turn to the Far East for so much inspiration – intricate temples, ornate archways, delicate flowers. It’s all a feast for the eyes. But despite being so far away, there are a few places right on our doorstep that offer a similar vibe. One of those places is Scarborough’s Peasholm Park.
Located on the North side of this beloved seaside town, Peasholm Park takes inspiration from the Orient, providing a tranquil space where visitors can stroll with family, walk the dog, or enjoy a coffee – come rain or shine.
Upon entering the park, guests are greeted by its stunning centrepiece – an island in the middle of a peaceful lake, topped by a magnificent temple structure that embodies the kind of visually striking temples you’d usually expect to find in Japan.

Amplified by the sight of visitors pedalling around in dragon-shaped pedalos, it almost feels like you’ve left Scarborough entirely and stepped into another world.
A popular highlight since 1912, when creator Mr Harry W. Smith unveiled his Japanese-inspired vision to the community, Peasholm Park has flourished over the years. It’s now sprinkled with thousands of trees, flowers, shrubs and more – a dream come true for nature lovers.

As if that weren’t enough, guests can discover an array of enchanting water features as they explore the park’s many winding paths – including mini waterfalls, a large cascading waterfall, streams, lily ponds, and beyond.
These features have also created a wonderful haven for wildlife. You’re likely to spot squirrels, rabbits, ducks, geese, and a wide variety of birds pottering about or perched in the trees.
Our favourite part? The beautiful Pagoda (or temple, as we mentioned earlier), which sits proudly on its own island in the centre of the lake. Reach the top, and you’ll discover a secluded garden complete with a pond and lush greenery, surrounded by striking architecture. Up there, you could be anywhere in the world – and that’s exactly why we love it.

In addition to peaceful walks – especially delightful on a Sunday morning – visitors can enjoy unique boat hire, perfect for families, or relax at the park’s own café, with front-row seats to the lake and stunning views of the Pagoda.
Ideally located just a stone’s throw from the beach, Peasholm Park is the perfect place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of Scarborough, before heading back into town to soak up everything this original British seaside resort has to offer.
Just another reason to love good old Scarbados.
