The Tranquil Yorkshire Park That’ll Transport You To The Far East

It’s no wonder we turn to the Far East for so much inspiration. Intricate temples, ornate archways, delicate flowers. It’s all a feast for the eyes. But despite it being so far away, there are a few places on our doorsteps offering a similar vibe. One of those places being Scarborough’s Peasholm Park.

Located on the North side of the seaside town, Peasholm Park takes inspiration from the Orient, providing a tranquil place where visitors can stroll with family, walk their dogs or enjoy a coffee come rain or shine.

Upon walking into the park, guests are immediately welcomed by the park’s stunning centrepiece – an island in the middle of a peaceful lake that is topped by a magnificent temple structure, embodying the visually-gorgeous temples you’d usually only find in Japan.

Amplified by scenes of park visitors peddling dragon-shaped pedalo boats around the lake, and you’ll feel like you’ve escaped Scarborough and stepped into a whole other country.

A popular Scarborough highlight since way back in 1912, when creator Mr Harry. W. Smith unveiled his Japanese-inspired creation to the community and opened it to the public, the park has continued to flourish over the years – glittered with thousands of trees, flowers, shrubs, and more making the place a nature lover’s dream.

If that wasn’t all, guests can enjoy various water features as they stroll through the park’s many crevices, including mini waterfalls, one large waterfall, streams, lily ponds and more.

All of its components have made the most welcoming home for the local wildlife, and you’ll regularly spy squirrels, rabbits, geese, ducks and birds pottering the grounds and bobbing through the trees.

Our favourite part, however, has to be the beautiful Pagoda (or temple, as we referred to it earlier), which prominently stands central to the park atop its own island.

When you reach the top, guests will find a secluded garden complete with its own pond and ample plants, with beautiful architecture surrounding. Up there, you really do feel like you could be anywhere in the world – which is why we love it so much.

In addition to the peaceful walk – which is particularly enjoyable on a Sunday morning – guests can take advantage of the unique boat hire, suitable for all the family, or pop to the park’s own cafe to while away the hours in front of the large lake (with views of the Pagoda, of course!).

Ideally located just a stone’s throw away from the beach, Peasholm Park is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of Scarborough, before heading back into town to enjoy the original British seaside resort.

Just another reason to love good old Scarbados.
