Situated in between Grassington and Pateley Bridge, this natural wonder is an exciting opportunity to explore a natural cave system that was carved out millions of years ago. You can be led through lit pathways under the Yorkshire Dales through one mile worth of cave. Stump Cross caves are located beneath Greenhow hill.
The cave expands for 4 miles in total and was discovered in 1860 by lead miners. It has a rich history that goes back millions of years and new passageways have led to the discovery of prehistoric creatures like wolverine and reindeer. As the only cave system in the Southern Yorkshire Dales, it is a unique opportunity to see some awe-inspiring rock formations and explore another world.
It is classed as an area of outstanding beauty and it isn’t surprising. You can see remains of shells and debris solidified under pressure over millions of years.
The pathways are lit and highlight interesting points with information on its history and geology. Children can enjoy their fossil quiz featuring fun characters including Sally Shark Tooth and Timmy Trilobiteas they explore. They can also look out for the mystical fairy door trail along the cave way passages.
The caves are at a constant 7 degrees so dress appropriately for the temperatures and make sure you wear ideal – you can borrow wellies and are provided with a helmet.
After your visit, you can head to the cafe for some food and a drink before heading over to the gift shop for a memento of your trip. The Time Cafe serves up a hearty breakfast menu, as well as some decent pub grub style food and even a beer named after the Stump Cross beer.
The caves are open from 10am – 6pm every day, except during the winter months, where the caves are only open at weekends. The caves cost £7 for adults and £4.50 for children with kids under 4 getting in for free.
