Record-Breaking Mountaineer, Alan Hinkes OBE, Backs Roseberry Topping Replacing Matterhorn On Toblerone

Those in the know will be aware that Yorkshire beauty spot Roseberry Topping is often referred to as Yorkshire’s own Matterhorn in reference to the iconic mountain in the alps.

Well BBC Radio York wants to take this one step further and has discussed getting Roseberry Topping on the front of the iconic chocolate bar Toblerone, which is of course featured on the triangular bar.

They’ve even gone as far as talking to record-breaking Mountaineer Alan Hinkes OBE asking him if he’d be the ambassador for the cause of which he agreed.

The fun conversation was on the Breakfast show with Georgey Spanswick. When asked about the idea Hinkes took it all in good fun.

He said: “It’s a good wheeze, but they’re not going to are they? They’re a huge multinational. They’ll do what they want won’t they like.”

Accepting the invitation to be Breakfast’s ambassador for it, “It would be great for North Yorkshire. You never know what they might do.”

They discussed the pronunciation of Toblerone which it seems we have been getting wrong for some years although as Hinkes points out the word said with a Yorkshire accent sounds different to how everyone else in the world says it anyway.

Although it seems the popular hiking spot probably won’t ever feature on the choccie bar, it would be a great way to promote the area that’s for sure.

Alan Hinkes is famous for being the first British mountaineer to claim all 14 Himalayan eight-thousanders (mountains over 8,000 metres high) which he completed on 30th May 2005.
