This Michelin Star Restaurant Serves One Of The Best Sunday Roasts In York

We bloomin’ love a Sunday roast in York! You can’t beat a nice bit of meat and veg with lashings of gravy, served with a fluffy Yorkshire pudding. And whilst we love a good pub roast or a homemade roast at Mum’s, this Michelin-starred offering in York knocked our socks off when we visited earlier this month.

We ventured to Roots, which is situated a stone’s throw from the River Ouse, just across from Museum Gardens in the city centre. The restaurant earned its star back in 2021 and has been one of the city’s most renowned restaurants for years.

Boasting warm, modern pub vibes, Roots is the perfect place to unwind on a weekend, whether that be for their usual Friday and Saturday menu or—what we enjoyed on our visit—their new, incredible Sunday feast experience, which starts with an array of starters to get the taste buds going.

Roots is Tommy Banks, a British Michelin Star head chef restaurant, he also owns the Michelin-starred The Black Swan at Oldstead and another favourite of ours The Abbey Inn at Byland.

The best thing about a Michelin-starred spot is the freshness of the grub and the seasonality of the menu. And Roots is just that. Everything served here is hyper-seasonal, with much of the produce sourced from Tommy Banks’s family farm in Oldstead.

There were plenty of unique ingredients you won’t find anywhere else, as they’ve been fermented, pickled, and candied in-house. But what about the main event: the roast experience?

The roasts themselves were what dreams are made of, with the most perfect Yorkshire puddings, the crispiest yet fluffiest roasties, and perfectly cooked meats. Sides included cauliflower cheese, roasted carrots, flavourful hispi cabbage, and gravy specially created to pair with the meat.

We were blown away by the beef Wellington, which had been crafted to absolute perfection, and loved the light dessert to finish off with. The best thing about the Sunday roast was that everything was cooked to perfection and tasted utterly delicious.
