Happy Valley’s James Norton, Film ‘Nowhere Special’ Is On iPlayer Now

Yorkshire’s James Norton blew us all away as the wicked Tommy Lee Royce in the BBC drama Happy Valley, and more recently in the brilliant House of Guinness. Some call the film Nowhere Special his best role since he donned his West Yorkshire accent, terrorising the Hebden Bridge area.

Norton plays a terminally ill single father with one last heartbreaking duty: finding a new family to adopt his four-year-old son. The BBC has brought the film back to iPlayer tonight—and we can’t wait to rewatch one of Norton’s finest performances.

John, Norton’s character, is a 35-year-old window cleaner with terminal brain cancer. With only a few weeks left to live, he must find a replacement family to care for his son, Michael, after his death. It’s a gut-wrenching situation, and Norton plays it brilliantly.

Set in Northern Ireland, the film explores themes of love, loss, and familial bonds as John faces a challenge no parent would want: securing his son’s future, Good Housekeeping reports.

One thing is certain: the film, written and directed by Uberto Pasolini, is a certified tearjerker. Inspired by a true story, Pasolini was moved by an article about a terminally ill father who had to find a new family for his child before passing away.

With Norton in the lead, Nowhere Special boasts a perfect 100% critics’ approval rating and a 93% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It has certainly left its mark on both critics and audiences alike.

The emotional drama originally aired in 2021, and Nowhere Special is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
