These lists are a dime a dozen these days – and you’d be forgiven for thinking, “Have these people actually visited these places, or are they just dreamed up by someone sat in a London office chowing down on a Pret A Manger (which is a fancy Greggs for those who don’t know)?” But, enjoy these lists, as it’s easy to forget what’s on your doorstep when you’re busy planning your summer breaks.
And The Telegraph’s latest offering, ‘Britain’s Best Beaches,’ has shied away from the better known Yorkshire beaches like Scarborough, Whitby, and Bridlington, all found along the incredible East Coast. A coastline that we’d argue is the best in the country due to its natural beauty and varied landscape. From the endless sandy beaches of Filey, to the chalk cliffs of Flamborough, to the fossil hunting fun at Saltwick Bay rocky spur – there is endless joy to be had.
Coming in at number 14 in the list is Runswick Bay, described as “an inviting curve of sand and shingle.” Unlike its contemporaries, the beach “has resisted the usual trappings of seaside-y hotspots: burger vans, fish and chip shacks, knick-knack shops.” Instead, you can enjoy the former fishing village’s “red pantile-roofed cottages tumbling gently down the cliffside.”

The mile-and-a-half stretch of beach is great for fossil hunting as well as sandy for your classic ball-games, sandcastles, and more. In the summer months, you’ll find an ice cream van parked near the slipway to help keep you cool – perfect, right?
Runswick Bay is the only Yorkshire beach to feature in the list. It sits alongside other hot spots in the country such as Par, Isles of Scilly, Pedn Vounder in Cornwall, and Polzeath, also in Cornwall – all located on the south coast. The nearest beach to Runswick on the East Coast in the list is Cocklawburn and Cheswick, Northumberland.

Runswick Bay was named by The Independent in its list of top destinations to visit in 2024. As summer is only around the corner, the publisher named its favorite secret beaches – and this Yorkshire hidden gem was one. It seems like Runswick might be a popular spot this summer of 2024.
