This Historic Yorkshire Dales Castle Is One of England’s Most Complete Medieval Castles

One of the UK’s best-preserved medieval castles is located in the picturesque region of Wensleydale. Bolton Castle was built in 1378 by Sir Richard Le Scrope and took approximately 18 years to build. Its original purpose was a fortified residence rather than just a military base. It has a rather famous former occupant, Mary Queen of Scots, who was held captive at the castle in 1568.

Get Ready to Step into History

Today, Bolton Castle is a wonderful, fun-filled day out where you truly feel as if you are stepping back in time to the medieval period. The castle itself has five floors to explore, including the Great Chamber, a creepy dungeon, and the tower where you can get stunning views across Wensleydale.

Outside the castle, there are a host of activities and things to see that help you experience medieval life, including the following:

  • Medieval Games – You can try on medieval-style costumes and play traditional games.
  • Bird of Prey Displays – Watch the incredible flying displays of the resident owls, hawks, and falcons.
  • Archery Demonstration – Find out about the history of archery and how people were trained to use longbows to defend the castle from attacks. And yes, everyone is welcome to have a go!
  • Wild Boar Feeding – Get up close and personal with the castle’s wild boars. You can watch them being fed and learn all about these amazing animals and their role in medieval history.

Then there are the beautiful, historic gardens. Here you will find a vineyard and themed areas like the herb garden, the rose garden, and the bowling green. These areas are filled with vibrant, unique plants. There’s even a maze for you to get lost in!

Treats Fit for a King and Queen

If you are feeling peckish during your visit, then there is a tea room offering lots of delicious sweet treats and savoury dishes. You can choose from sandwiches, quiches, homemade cakes, scones, tray bakes, Bolton pie, pasties, and so much more. You can also choose from a selection of coffees, teas, and soft drinks. If after exploring the castle you are feeling particularly regal, you can push the boat out and treat yourself to a scrumptious afternoon tea. The tea room is open from 10am till 4pm.
