The Scenic Yorkshire Dales Walk With Waterfalls & Wild Swimming

Stainforth Force in Yorkshire is a delightful little walk for those who aren’t looking for anything too strenuous but want to tick off all the quintessential Yorkshire Dales experiences. It’s got everything you’d expect: a charming Yorkshire Dales village, classic dry stone walls, an ancient packhorse bridge, a stunning waterfall, and a perfect opportunity for a refreshing spot of wild swimming.

We were expecting a modest waterfall, but Stainforth is surprisingly impressive, especially after a heavy downpour when you can truly experience the dramatic force of the water crashing down. If you visit in the months of September and October, you might also be lucky enough to witness trout making their way upriver, launching themselves up the waterfall—a sight that is as mesmerising as it is rare.

The walk begins at the car park in the heart of Stainforth and is well signposted. You’ll pass through gates and descend a steep, winding hill where you’ll be greeted by the charming packhorse bridge, which gracefully arches over the River Ribble. This 17th-century bridge, known as Stainforth Packhorse Bridge or Knight Stainforth Bridge, is a Grade II listed structure that provides a scenic gateway to the captivating waterfall below.

Cross the bridge, and on your left-hand side, you’ll come to a wooden gate, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can use the ancient stone stile, adding a touch of authenticity to your hike. As you wander through the field, the soothing sound of Stainforth Force will guide you to the waterfall—a magnificent cascade surrounded by rugged limestone cliffs. It’s an idyllic spot to sit, relax, and soak in the natural beauty. There’s something wonderfully serene about being enveloped by nature, and the rhythmic sound of the waterfall’s continuous flow acts like a calming white noise, ideal for those who appreciate a moment of mindfulness. The waterfall and its plunge pool are not safe for wild swimming, but there are some fantastic opportunities further on down the river.

Once you’ve had your fill of the waterfall’s splendour, you can rejoin the path and venture further downriver, where you’ll discover a tranquil little stony beach. This secluded spot is perfect for a leisurely dip in the cool, clear waters. It was blissful to cool off here, with only the occasional passerby, adding to the sense of peaceful solitude.

The walk can be extended into a circular route if you wish to explore further, or you can simply retrace your steps, crossing back over the bridge and ascending the hill once more.
