This Yorkshire seaside town is brimming with charm, offering the quintessential coastal experience in a setting far quainter than its bustling neighbours, Bridlington and Scarborough. Located along the North Yorkshire coast, Filey is an idyllic seaside getaway.
This small town boasts stunning coastal views and is surrounded by lush farmland, making it a haven for nature lovers and those seeking a slower pace of life. It’s especially appealing to walkers, with its expansive beaches stretching for five miles.
Filey’s beautiful sandy beach is its standout feature, drawing visitors back time and time again. From the iconic Filey Brigg peninsula to the hidden gem of Hunmanby Gap—a favourite among locals—it’s a treasure trove of natural beauty.

There’s ample parking around Filey, and while the walk down to the beach can be steep, it’s worth it. In winter, you’ll find dog walkers enjoying the bracing air, while summer brings families basking in the sun and building sandcastles.
Strolling along the beach, you can admire the dramatic cliffs that frame views of the North Sea. It’s a peaceful experience, with the soothing sounds of waves lapping the shore and the occasional cry of seagulls overhead.
Filey is also the endpoint for two significant walking routes: the Cleveland Way and the Yorkshire Wolds Way. The Yorkshire Wolds Way leads you into the scenic chalk hills of East Yorkshire, while the Cleveland Way offers a breathtaking coastal trek with some of the region’s most captivating vistas.

In town, you can indulge in classic seaside fare like fish and chips. Popular spots include Inghams, which both locals and tourists love, and CJ’s Fish & Chips, which is a great choice for grabbing a bite before heading to the beach.
The town is also home to a range of fantastic pubs to enjoy a pint in; after all, what’s a walk on the beach without a nice reward at the end of it?
For an evening meal, we highly recommend The Glasshouse at Charlotte’s, home to the second-oldest grapevine in the United Kingdom, which is nearly 200 years old. Dining here is a memorable experience steeped in history.
