Two Yorkshire Villages Named In Britain’s 30 Greatest Villages

Yorkshire is home to some of the most quaint villages and towns. From the Yorkshire Dales dry stone walls to the heather moorlands of the North York Moors. And, we aren’t the only ones that have noticed. The Telegraph has featured two of Yorkshire’s in its list of the Britain’s 30 Greatest Villages.

The travel experts at the paper has picked the unique North Yorkshire settlement of Hutton-le-Hole and Saltaire in West Yorkshire in the top spots. Both feature alongside villages across the country from Scotland to Cornwall.

Located in the North York Moors National Park, the idyllicvillage of Hutton-le-hole is famous for the sheep that wander free grazing on the verges and village green next to the beck that makes its way through the centre of the village.

It’s also home to the quaint chocolate factory, stunning cottages, and scenes reminiscent of a postcard. While Yorkshire is packed full of little-known villages oozing with beauty, the travel experts selected Hutton-le-Hole for its a range of reasons.

The Telegraph said: “Hutton-le-Hole combines its good looks – pillowy village green, white picket fences, babbling beck, creeper-covered cottages – with a firm sense of reality. Sheep graze the greens, volunteers help at the Ryedale Folk Museum, and the village hall organises community events (the annual duck race is a favourite).”

It continues: “Watch chocolates being made at The Chocolate Factory, find hand-turned wood items, glassware and jewellery at Greenwood Crafts, pick up picnic treats from The Old School House Deli and Bakery or, on sunny days, relax with a drink outside The Crown Inn.”

Saltaire, also featured in the list. It became a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2001, was called an “outstanding example of a model village”. It’s home to Salt Mills that holds a huge collection of work by Bradford artist David Hockney. They also mention to combining a visit to Saltaire with a walk into Bradford via Lister Park.
