Just a stone’s throw from the popular seaside town of Whitby is this beautiful pirate-like bay is the perfect place to explore. The fossil hunter’s paradise is great for those looking for a brisk seaside walk. if that sounds like a bit of you, then add Saltwick Bay on the Yorkshire Coast bucket list.
The rugged coastal cove offers a more adventurous beach experience for nature lovers and is like stepping back in time. You half expect to see pirates rowing ashore – with eye patches and wooden legs – to hide their gold after being away on an adventure. Once down on the beach you are surrounded by the high cliffs with beautiful stacks standing tall out of the sea.
Head down the steep sandy steps and uncover the sandy beach, which is full of hidden treats. There is a wonderful waterfall that splashes down straight onto the beach, which is made up of freshwater springs that spill over the rocky edge.

Depending on wether you get there when the tied is out, you’ll even get to see a shipwreck if you head towards Whitby. And, alongside various rocky sections where you’ll often find people rock pooling. The beach is also considered a fossil treasure trove, too with hunters flocking to the beach to search for a piece of history.
And it is also home to fascinating shield reef formations and flat slate beds. This unique ever-changing beach has to be Yorkshire’s most curious. Unfortunately, we visited during high-tide so couldn’t see the wreckage
However, we loved the views over towards Whitby and the changing ground underfoot as we explored This is the perfect place for a dog walk, or romantic walk on the beach and a lovely family walk, especially if you have curious kids!
