We love a farm shop in Yorkshire – and with plenty to choose from, it’s no surprise. From tasty local meats, cheeses, and chutneys – to the local tipples, there’s so much to find in a local farm shop whilst you’re out and about exploring Yorkshire. With its vast countryside and proud farming heritage, it’s the perfect spot to hunt down local goods.
And, one of our wonderful North Yorkshire farm shops has won an award at the Farm Shop & Deli Show Retail Awards 2024, which was announced on Monday. The Greengrocer in Thirsk beat out the competition to take home gold in the ‘Greengrocer’ category, beating some stiff competition.
The award aims to celebrate the UK’s best farm shops, highlighting the country’s best-loved specialist retailers that champion some of the best produce in the country. The awards champion pillars of community, great produce, and sustainable products across our beloved country – and this North Yorkshire gem took home the gold.
Back in November, judges all came together in the big smoke (London) to deliberate over the candidates at Fortnum & Mason’s and decided that The Greengrocer should win the top prize. Businesses were shortlisted into various categories such as Baker, Butcher, Cheesemonger, Delicatessen, Farm Shop Large, Farm Shop Small, Fishmonger, Food Hall, Greengrocer, Online Business, and Independent local shop/Village store.
They put into seven UK regions: Anglia, Midlands, North England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, South England, and Wales. Yolk Farm, Boroughbridge, was nominated in the farm shop large category, and Farm Gate Farm Shop in Easingwold was nominated in the farm shop small category – but didn’t quite make the cut.
Judge Matt Whelan, MD Fieldfare who champions the Retailer Awards, tells us: ‘We are delighted to champion the Farm Shop & Deli Show Retailer Awards. What a great experience to be a member of the judging panel! Having the opportunity to see so many fantastic independent retailers, reviewing the many approaches they take to delivering a wonderful experience for their shoppers, was both a pleasure and a challenge!’
