Yes, that’s right! It’s not a dream – the nation’s favourite comfort food has been turned into pick n’ mix form at the Ye Olde Nags Head in Castleton in the Peak District. You can choose from a range of mash, sausages and gravy to create your ideal sausage and mash – and let me tell you, it’s bloomin’ delicious.
After, walking one of the many hikes that surround the idyllic village, you have an amazing choice of pubs and restaurants to recoup. We chose to visit the Nags Head and were pleasantly surprised by the ales on offer as well as the food. As you step into the ye olde pub, you’re created with a snug environment with all the trapings you’d expect from a traditional pub. Best of all, it’s dog friendly, so you lil’ pooch can come along as well.
We are talking dim lighting, wood beamed ceilings, warm fire place and of course tasty ales. We went for a pint of Guinness (not very Yorkshire, I know, but that heart wanted what the heart wanted at the time) and a cider before being seated in a beautiful, busy dining space with plenty of natural light.

There are a range of things on offer on the menu, but it was the pick n’ mix sausage and mash that we were craving. We chose from the special board and went with Cumberland and venison mustard, with cheesy mash and black pudding mash both served with rich onion gravy.
They even came inside a giant Yorkshire pudding, that was soft and fluffy and complimented the sausage and mash perfectly – oh, and they threw in a battered onion ring for good measure – leaving us stuffed.
The sausages were high quality, juicy and packed with flavour as well as being cooked to perfection. The mash was creamy and the variations worked well and was the proper pub grub we were wanting after hiking in the Peaks all day.
The best thing about this was that personalisation of our meal, and is great as we all know everyone has a different preference – especially with sausage and mash.
