A hidden gem near Whitby in North Yorkshire has emerged as one of Britain’s best-kept “secret beaches,” perfect for those seeking a break from the crowds.
Runswick Bay has earned accolades for its “direct access to a sandy beach” from The Independent, placing this coastal village on its list of top destinations to visit in 2024. As summer is only around the corner, the publisher named its favourite secret beaches – and this Yorkshire hidden gem was one.
It commented that it was: “A secluded spot situated five miles north of popular tourist town Whitby, Runswick Bay is a quaint village hidden behind the peak of a hill. Its rounded coastline is dotted with holiday cottages and whitewashed houses, with immediate access to a sandy beach. Plus, there are water sports to enjoy, as well as nearby caves to explore. Keep an eye on the tide times though, as the beach can disappear when the sea comes in.”
And, we couldn’t agree more! During the day, you can take a walk along the sandy beaches and spend the day paddling on the ocean, making a sandcastle, fossil hunting and relaxing with your family before going back to enjoy a traditional pub and some well-earned grub.
The winding streets of this hamlet are like a trip through history, whether it’s the rustic Runswick Bay Lifeboat Station or the Royal Hotel pub that serves up great traditional meals.
Runswick Bay is also located along the Cleveland Way National Trail, so there are plenty of opportunities for a brisk walk along the Yorkshire coast – and is a popular fossil hunting spot, so you can explore for hours and maybe find a piece of history along the way.
