This Yorkshire Chippy Has Won A National Award For Its Work

We love a chippy tea, and we aren’t surprised that a local York chippy has won a national award for its fish and chips. We enjoyed getting stuck into its viral Irish spice bags at last year’s York Christmas Market and intend to visit its chippy soon.

Millers has two locations in York: one in Haxby and another at Shambles Market. The York chippy won an honour at the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) UK Awards at Fishmongers’ Hall in London last week.

It took home the National Sustainability Communications Award, which recognises businesses championing sustainably sourced fish and making a significant impact through their sustainability work. The award was introduced for the first time this year.

Millers has a long history in Haxby, with the family business dating back to the 1940s. The family-run business has been serving the people of Haxby for generations, with its roots dating back to the 1940s. Millers became MSC-certified in 2017 and serves sustainably sourced fish, including haddock and cod. Its commitment to sustainability also extends beyond the food it serves, with the team regularly sharing videos and content to help raise awareness of the importance of protecting our oceans.

David Miller spoke about winning the award, saying: “We’re very proud to be MSC certified. It’s so important for young people to understand the importance of sustainability so we can continue to have fish into the future.”

George Clark, programme director at MSC UK and Ireland, said: “Millers is an outstanding example of how food service businesses can use sustainable seafood to make a real impact.

“Whether through innovative menu development, customer engagement, community outreach or national media coverage, they’ve gone beyond simply serving MSC certified seafood to actively championing sustainable fishing and helping consumers understand the impact of their choices. Their passion, commitment and leadership make them thoroughly deserving winners.”
