This Yorkshire Neighbourhood Has Been Named In The Coolest In Britain

Sheffield’s Kelham Island has once again been named as one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the Britain. The former industrial area of Sheffield has transformed in recent years to become a hub for food & drink and is a hot spot for young professionals.

The neighbourhood was featured in Timeout magazine’s top 51 coolest neighbourhoods in the world back in 2022. It’s seems that the industrial warehouses and streets make for the perfect backdrop to enjoy some of the best food offerings the ‘Steel City’ has to offer.

Once known for making silverware and cutlery, the area is today home to “urban micro-cidery, independent food producers, riverside murals, offices, pop-ups, real-ale pubs and a mix of homes – some new, others in repurposed heritage buildings,” The Telegraph highlights.

With a history that includes a ‘fledgling’ Arctic Monkeys practicing at the Yellow Arch Recording Studios, which has also seen Sheffield’s Richard Hawley, Reverend and The Makers and Jarvis Cocker have all recorded there – it’s no surprise the area has been given the title of cool.

Th Telegraph recommend visiting JÖRO as well as visiting The Kelham Island Brewery, which opened back in 1990. It describes it as a “proper boozer where guest ales start at £3.90”, which can’t be bad.

We couldn’t agree more, and adding to the list we’d recommend a couple of places including a restaurant owned by Bring Me The Horizon frontman and local resident Oli Sykes. Church: Temple of Fun has something for everyone; it takes its style from ‘barcades’, a popular concept in Brazil (home country of Sykes’s wife), which features a combination of classic arcade games and a bar that features beers from local and overseas microbreweries.

Also, Pina. Housed in a former warehouse and located in Sheffield’s steel quarter, Pina serve up Mexican street food everyday. The tortillas are freshly made in-house everyday with love. Our favourite of the choice of tacos has to be ‘The King: Al Pastor – perfect to enjoy with a few craft ales.
