Yorkshire’s food scene is incredible. Whether you’re looking for a country pub serving up the classics or a cool neighbourhood city spot, God’s Own Country has it all. And that’s why Michelin Guide to Britain and Ireland keeps adding its restaurants to its list of recommendations.
Each month, the guide, which has become the ultimate handbook for foodies, has new additions and in September, 22 places were added, including a new spot in Leeds. The Smithfield, which only opened back in April, has fast earned a name for itself thanks to the collaboration between York-based brewers Crooked Brewing and Chef James Donovan.
The Smithfield describes itself as a social dining experience with changing menus of British-European cooking that celebrates seasonal Yorkshire produce, with generous sharing plates and a welcoming seat at the table. They focus on a nose-to-tail ethos, which can be seen with their pig’s head croquettes.

It has made a name for itself as the perfect place to chill with mates and watch the world go by with a beer or a nice glass of wine, to wash down the sharer pies or whole grilled seabass and a reason why it has been added to the Michelin Guide.
Announcing the great news to Instagram, The Smithfield said: “We’re very pleased and grateful to have been included in the Michelin Guide. To get this kind of recognition so early in our journey is a real honour, and one we certainly don’t take for granted. Thank you to our wonderful guests for your continued support.

Also, huge thanks to our brilliant team. The Smithfield is what it is because of your hard work, enthusiasm, energy and diligence. This recognition belongs to you.
“We’re just getting started, and our focus remains the same: creating a welcoming space for our community, serving food and drink we’re proud of, championing great British and local produce, and contributing our small part towards Leeds’ brilliant hospitality scene. The Smithfield.”
