We love a chippy tea here in Yorkshire, so it’s no surprise that two chippies are named in the top 5 shortlist. The National Awards are the fish & chips Oscars, and the winner and two runners-up get the chance to be taken away to an exploration of the Icelandic seafood industry, courtesy of Seafood from Iceland.
Two of Yorkshire’s chippies have been shortlisted. One is the popular fish and chip restaurant in Whitby, Trenchers on New Quay Road, known and loved by locals and tourists alike. It is an icon of the seaside town, and it is sure to be a strong contender.

Another chippy is Whitby’s Restaurant & Take Away, in Rotherham, a former winner of the award back in 2019, and which also has a sister venue in Doncaster. If you’re in South Yorkshire, we recommend you head over to either of these venues.
But what are they judged on? Things such as amazing food, passion for the sector, quality and high-level commitment to serving customers are a few of the things that will be judged. The winner will be announced on the 25th February 25 at the awards ceremony at the Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge, in London.

This year, the winner and two runners-up will be invited on an exploration of the Icelandic seafood industry, courtesy of Seafood from Iceland.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which organises the event, said: “We are so excited for these five businesses which have been set apart as the UK’s foremost fish and chip restaurants. The contenders have such love for what they do, selecting only quality produce for customers and placing much attention to detail into how the fish, potatoes and other produce and ingredients are prepared and cooked, so that every bite is knock-out.
“Having restaurants like these in our towns and cities is essential for keeping our great British tradition alive and the beauty of the awards process is that it helps chippies maintain and elevate standards.”
