Whitby Brewery To Transform & Reopen Vacant Historic Pub

A long-vacant Whitby pub is set to be given a new lease of life after plans were approved for local independent brewer Whitby Brewery to take over and refurbish the site.

Whitby Brewery, which is well known for its stunning location beneath Whitby Abbey and its award-winning range of beers, will transform the former First In Last Out pub on York Terrace into a new venue called The Railway Tap.

Located at 1 York Terrace, the pub will operate seven days a week, serving breakfast, tea, coffee, and alcoholic drinks from morning until 12.30am. The reopening will be welcome news for both locals and visitors, particularly at a time when many pubs across the country are facing closure.

As part of the redevelopment, the building’s first floor will be converted from residential use into additional pub space, almost doubling the venue’s public floor area. The plans were approved by North Yorkshire Council on 9th June, subject to conditions.

The investment marks an exciting expansion for Whitby Brewery and promises to breathe new life into a prominent building that has stood empty for some time. The new venue will add to Whitby’s thriving food and drink scene while providing another destination for visitors exploring the historic seaside town.

Supporting the application, Whitby Civic Society said the reopening of the pub would help to “restore community spirit in an area decimated by conversions of large houses into holiday accommodation”, while also attracting visitors and supporting the local economy.

The society also praised the design of the scheme, noting that the proposed alterations are sympathetic to the Victorian architecture of the area and expressing hope that as much of the building’s original external detail as possible will be retained.

With Whitby Brewery’s reputation for producing quality beer and creating welcoming spaces, The Railway Tap looks set to become a popular addition to the town when it opens its doors.
