York Christmas Market Return Date Announced For 2024

The award-winning York Christmas Market is set to return from 14 November to 22 December 2024. Once again, 75 iconic alpine chalets will adorn Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, transforming the area into a festive wonderland filled with local traders and artisan products. Visitors of all ages can also enjoy the vintage carousel in King’s Square, adding to the holiday cheer.

York Christmas Market was recently honoured in the ‘Best Large Speciality Market’ category at the Great British Market Awards, hosted by The National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), sharing the accolade with Stratford-upon-Avon.

This event beautifully showcases York’s vibrant community, highlighting the strong support for Yorkshire-based businesses. This year, 80% of the traders hail from Yorkshire, offering a delightful mix of street food and traditional mulled wine.

Environmental sustainability and accessibility remain key priorities for the market. Sustainable traders have been given preference, ensuring a positive environmental and societal impact. These traders are dedicated to ethical practices, utilizing eco-friendly materials, and upholding fair standards. The market promotes a more responsible and conscious shopping experience that benefits everyone by supporting them.

As in previous years, the market will feature a designated quiet period from 10am to 12pm daily, allowing visitors to enjoy a peaceful, music-free atmosphere with fewer crowds.

The Virtual Market will also return, helping attendees plan their visits. With this tool, visitors can easily locate chalets and map out their routes for a more convenient experience.

The market’s involvement in the Take A Seat Initiative ensures rest areas for those in need, particularly older individuals with limited mobility, making the city more accessible to everyone.

Safety is a top priority, with the market participating in the Safe Space Scheme. This initiative involves a network of businesses providing secure places for women who may feel threatened.

Additional considerations include encouraging the use of the online Toilet Map finder for locating restrooms and promoting public transport, such as the York Park & Ride service, which offers regular connections to the city centre from six locations.

Sarah Loftus, Managing Director of Make It York, said: “We are thrilled to announce the return of our award-winning Christmas Market! The team works hard to implement numerous measures to ensure a delightful and inclusive experience for all. We are always dedicated to creating a festive environment that everyone can enjoy.”
