The team behind the Viking-themed pub in York, Valhalla, are set to open a new venue in Whitby, with a vision for something similar in spirit. Whitby Abbey, 199 steps, the pier and sandy beaches are just some of the things that the seaside town popular with thousands is known for. And, now this exciting new venue gets to add to that history.
Valhalla opened in York just off the Shambles Market back in 2017 and has been a huge hit in the historic city. Now looking for similar success in Whitby are Matt Bedingham and Vincent Roberts, the team behind Valhalla.
The pair have purchased a Grade II listed historic building on Grape Lane in Whitby. While this won’t be a second Valhalla, if the York venue is anything to go by, the duo are sure to transform a neglected building into something brilliant.

Famed for its links to Dracula and all things gothic, Whitby seems like the perfect location for the pair, who have already made a huge success of their York venture. Speaking to YorkMix, Vincent said: “We’ve been talking about expanding and doing something a little different. And I guess the closest place to us that edges on that gothic side, the rock’n’roll and the history, is Whitby.”
“We’ve both been visiting Whitby for as long as we can remember, since being kids, and we absolutely adore the place,” adds Matt. Matt also described Whitby as a “jewel on the Yorkshire coast”, saying: “When the building on Grape Lane came up, it was just too good to pass up.”

The pair emphasised that this will not be a second Valhalla venue, but added: “If you like what makes Valhalla tick – good craft beer, a friendly place with an alternative vibe, rock and metal music – then you’ll love what we’re going to deliver in Whitby.”
Once a woodworker’s shop, the building will be transformed to feature a ground-floor bar with a basement seating area accessed via 250-year-old steps, as well as a beer garden outside. The pair also plan to create a two-bedroom holiday let on the top floor, with three one-bed flats on the floors below, according to YorkMix.
We look forward to seeing what the team behind Valhalla come up with, in the meantime, we might just have to pop to York for a quick pint while we wait.
