This Thai Restaurant Is Set To open In UK’s Oldest Store

Giggling Squid, a Thai restaurant chain, is coming to York and moving into a former music store, Banks Musicroom, in York city centre which closed after 267 years – and was said to be the oldest shop in Britain. The old store on Blake Street, which can trace its roots back to 1756, will be able to cater for 200 diners.

Plans for the Giggling Squid restaurant have been submitted to the City of York Council by Giggling Restaurants Ltd. We’ve visited the restaurant in Harrogate and can say it is an absolutely stunning spot to visit.

Giggling Squid first opened in Brighton back in 2002 founded by husband and wife Andy and Pranee Laurillard and now has 50 restaurants across the UK. It really is a pretty space and we can highly recommend the dishes and of course the cocktails.

On our visit to the Giggling Squid in Harrogate we enjoyed prawn crackers to start before tucking into a lunch tapas menu, which meant we could try a range of dishes without splashing the cash. We enjoyed a red Thai curry and a massaman curry, which both came with rice and two sides that included pork dumplings, spring rolls salt and pepper squid rings and chicken wings.

The Giggling Squid in York is not the only new restaurant in Yorkshire that is planned. The company is said to be also looking at opening a branch in Leeds.

We hope that the new venue, when it opens is as good as the York one – as this space being such an important part of York’s history – needs something great to match its heritage.
