Yorkshire Beaches To Ban Dogs Again From 4th July

Looks like our pet pooches will no longer be allowed on busy beaches from next month. Originally lifted during lockdown so that we could stretch our pets little legs on the beaches of Yorkshire, councils are looking to re-impose the ban, as beaches are set to become increasingly busy once again.

Last week, council officials in Scarborough ended the relaxation of the rules by confirming enforcement was now back in operation. And now, the ban has extended, covering both North and South Bay, Whitby, West Cliff and Tate Hill, Filey and Sandsend. East Yorkshire councils are following suit, with North and South Beach in Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea set to have the ban re-imposed from July 4. The promenade areas in Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea adjacent to the beaches also carry a restriction, which requires owners to keep their pets on a lead whilst on the beach. A fixed fine of £75 could be given if owners do not abide by these guidelines.

East Riding Council said “The exclusion on dogs using certain areas of the beach lasts just for the summer season.

“The vast majority of owners know the importance of not taking their dogs onto the beach during the summer months when children and families are playing in the sand but there are plenty of other areas on the beaches where dogs are still welcome.”

Councillor Tony Randerson, Scarborough’s cabinet member for Neighbourhoods, said: “It made sense not to enforce the ban while lockdown continued but since the rules have changed our beaches are becoming increasingly busy.”

All areas will be clearly signposted areas where dogs are banned, and dogs will be welcomed again once the peak tourism season ends.
