Yorkshire Brit Pop Icons Shed Seven Top UK Album Chart Nearly 30 Years After Debut

Brit Pop legends Shed Seven have celebrated their first-ever Official Number 1 albumA Matter of Time 29 years and three months after their first appearance in the chart. The York-formed group’ career spans three decades and it seems they’re still going strong.

Fronted by lead singer Rick Witter with the rest of the band Paul Banks, Tom Gladwin, Tim Wills and Rob Maxfield they’ve become the British rock group with the longest gap between their debut album and first number one album.

Shed Seven took to their socials to share their achievement, writing: “We’ve waited 30 years for this announcement, but the stars have finally aligned, and we’re thrilled to announce that our album ‘A Matter of Time’ is number one on the official UK album charts!

“A huge thank you to all our fans for supporting us; and for everyone who’s bought the record … it really is a dream come true! Finally, we’ve got the gold at the end of the rainbow!”

They debuted back in 1994 with their album Change Giver, which peaked at number 16 and have enjoyed 6 top 40 albums in the UK, with four in the top 10.

As they come into the 30th anniversary of the band, Shed Seven are enjoying the topping of the charts for the first time ever. A part of the huge Brit Pop movement in the 90s, Shed Seven had massive hits with classics such as Chasing Rainbows, Going For Gold, Disco Down and many more bangers.

Ska stalwarts The Specials hold the overall record for the longest gap between their official album’s chart debut and first No 1 LP, with 39 years and three months between the eponymous 1979 release The Specials and 2019 chart-topper Encore.
