If you’re waiting for your next fix of All Creatures Great and Small, then this new show on 5 might just satisfy that craving. Actor Samuel West, who plays Siegfried Farnon, is teaming up with Adrian Edmondson in Sam & Ade Go Birding on 5, which is set to air tonight. If you’re a fan of birdwatching, this promises to be some wonderfully relaxing television.
I don’t know if it’s just a sign of getting older or whether birdwatching is having a moment right now, but it seems to be popping up everywhere. Tonight (Tuesday 14th April), Samuel West and Adrian Edmondson hit our screens with their new show. West, a keen birdwatcher for over 20 years, has travelled across the UK and beyond in pursuit of his passion — and he’s invited his friend Adrian Edmondson along, a complete novice, to introduce him to some of the most beautiful birds and habitats.
The pair visit remote West Cornwall in search of the chough, hoping to spot some exotic wind-blown visitors along the way. They also head on a “wild goose chase” in North Norfolk, while on the Somerset Levels they set out to find the elusive “booming” bittern.
As well as birdwatching, Adrian brings along his love of cooking — and, of course, a good pint — meaning picnics and pub stops are just as essential to the journey. Blending humour, friendship, and the beauty of the natural world, Go Birding is as much about companionship as it is about the wildlife of the British Isles.

Often described as a waiting game, birdwatching gives rise to conversations on topics such as obsession, ageing, acting, loss, and the hobbies that have shaped their lives. Posting on social media, 5 said: “Old friends. New adventures. Samuel West and Adrian Edmondson take you birdwatching across the British Isles in a stunning new three-part series.”
If this sounds like your kind of thing, Sam & Ade Go Birding starts Tuesday 14th April at 8pm. Visit the 5 website to find out more.
