We aren’t vegan here at The Yorkshireman office, but some of these meat-free offerings in Leeds have got us ready to turn. We can’t wait to visit the city after lockdown to sample some of the best vegan food Leeds has to offer. There is so much choice, whether you’re craving a dirty burger or some home-cooked delights – Yorkshire’s biggest city has everything your tummy could possibly desire. Helping you to navigate the city’s vegan world, we’ve put together some of our top favourites for you to enjoy – in no particular order.

Found inside The Old Red Bus Station, Cantina claims to be the first all-vegan canteen that has an ever-changing menu of ‘classic’ and ‘naughty junk food’. Serving some of the best vegan food In Leeds, its vegan menu has featured some tasty treats throughout their time. They’re bringing out a new menu when lockdown ends but, their Banh-Mi – which consists of buttermilk fried cauliflower with crispy kale, fried onions and a sriracha caramel sauce – is our favourite. Other highlights on the menu include deep-fried Oreos, cauli’ or mock wings, and loaded mac n’ cheeze – which will give you an idea of the delicious offerings they have. It’s definitely some of the best vegan food in Leeds.
2. Roots & Fruits
A vegetarian cafe that has been an old favourite in Leeds for over 25 years, Roots & Fruits is a firm fave with vegans – thanks to its homely and welcoming atmosphere. Found in the Grand Arcade, this independent venue celebrates great vegetarian and vegan foods. Their menu varies often, but you can enjoy some wonderful vegan cakes, burgers and plant-based Italian dishes.
3. Friends of Food
With a slogan like ‘100% plant-based gourmet burgers – without compromise’, you know you’re in for a good meal. Situated in Hyde Park, their vegan burgers are tasty, succulent and so, so moreish. The ‘Signature’ burger features a Beyond Meat patty, smoked gouda ‘cheez’, a delicious house sauce, iceberg lettuce, dill pickles, red onion and tomato. Our favourite, however, is the burger ‘The Big B’, which features a homemade whiskey BBQ sauce, Beyond Meat smashed patty, smoked gouda cheez, and This™ maple bacon.

4. JJ’s Vish & Chips
Found on Kirkstall Road – JJ’s is great for a classic chip shop experience in a meat-free fashion. They have re-imagined some classics such as ‘vish & chips’, Tofish & chips, battered sosage, and scam-pi. The creative chip shop favourites can be enjoyed with curry sauce, gravy and peas – giving a real authentic experience that us Yorkshire folk thoroughly appreciate.
5. Döner Summer
Döner Summer was voted on of PETA’s top 10 vegan kebabs in the UK – and it’s not hard to see why. Situated in Leeds, the kebab legends have four other shops – including venues in both Hull and York. They serve their kebabs on locally baked Turkish bread with house sauces, vegan doner, a faux chicken – and a whole lotta filling.

6. Punk Vegan
In the heart of Hyde Park, Punk Vegan makes exciting vegan food that tastes great. Their burgers are super loaded and full of flavour, and luckily for Leeds folk are available for takeaway. Their Punk Fried Chickn is as visually appealing as it is tasty – filled with chickn style seitan fillets, creamy slaw, pink garlic mayo and pink onion. Other stuff on the menu includes their breakfasts and loaded fries (which look just as moreish) – so get stuck and try when you get a chance!

7. The Great Indian Vegan
Situated in the city centre, The Great Indian Vegan does a range of Indian starters, mains and desserts that use locally sourced ingredients for their homemade curries. They were established in Leeds 10 years ago, so are old hands in the city. Indian food enthusiasts will know all too well that traditional Indian food is mostly vegan, so one thing that isn’t compromised here is that authentic flavour we all know and love.

8. Knaves Kitchen at Oporto Bar
Knaves Kitchen in Oporto is a 100% vegan fast food pop-up, serving up delicious delights such a deep-fried chickn that will definitely satisfy your naughty cravings. Some other junk food goodness on offer is their poutine with Knave’s Gravy, cheeze curds, and ‘facon’ bits. They also do gyros, loaded fries and more! Who knew being vegan could be so mischievous?

9. Meat Is Dead
Found in Kirkstall, their main menu has a great mix of healthy small plates like Roasted Root Fries, Shashuka, Sweet Patatas Bravas and some large plates and platters as well. It looks a great menu to have a dining experience with friends and family. They also so a special Sunday Roast – that’ll you’ll have to try.

10. Fat Annie’s
Found in Leeds Kirkgate since 2017, they went totally meat free in 2020 and their menu includes a bunch of New York-inspired dishes including a range of burgers and banging sides that will make you not wonder why you ever needed meat.
This is one of the best vegan food places in Leeds When people think of vegan food, they can sometimes think of healthy grub. Sometimes you want something naught and Mog’s has got that tasty alterative to junk food in vegan form with their delicious dirty burges and sriracha-smothered fries that will fulfill that naughty itch that sometimes needs scratching.
