Europe’s Biggest Maze Unveils Giant Sir David Attenborough Maze To Celebrate His 100th Birthday

In celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, York Maze has revealed that this year’s maze design will honour the veteran broadcaster and naturalist’s centenary. Opening to the public in July, the giant corn maze attracts thousands of visitors each year, and this year’s maze is a fitting tribute. This year’s maze will feature Sir David himself, surrounded by iconic animals from his legendary nature programmes.

Known for such iconic shows, Attenborough was born on 8th May 1926, and went on to join the BBC in 1952, becoming one of the world’s most respected and influential wildlife presenters. Creating the homage, more than one million maize seeds have been planted in the 15-acre field. Once the plants emerge, the image is cut into the field and by mid-July, when the crop is fully grown, the image of David Attenborough will be revealed.

Farmer and Maze Master Tom Pearcy said, “We are announcing the theme a bit earlier than usual this year to coincide with Sir David’s 100th birthday today. Each year we choose a topical theme for the maze design. I grew up watching David Attenborough, he is an icon of British broadcasting and I’m honoured to make my contribution to his 100th birthday celebrations.”

The Sir David Attenborough 100 Years on Planet Earth Maze will be open for visitors to explore from Saturday, 11th July to Thursday, 3rd September 2026, after which the crop will be harvested. Families will navigate the maze of pathways to find six viewing platforms and special photo points featuring life-size models of some of the iconic animals featured in Sir David’s nature programmes.
