First-Look Images From Jodie Whittakers New Netflix Drama Released

Yorkshire’s own Jodie Whittaker, known for being Doctor Who and more recently the BBC drama Time, is set to appear in a brand new Netflix series Toxic Town. The drama will tell the story of the Corby Toxic Waste Case which is regarded as the UK’s biggest environmental scandal.

Set to be a gritty series, Toxic Town will drop on Netflix on Thursday 27th February and will tell the story of the town’s fight for justice after 19 children were born with various deformities as a result of a botched steelworks cleanup.

Families affected made pleas to Corby Council and even took them to the High Court in a bid for them to take accountability. Jodie will play the role of Susan McIntyre, one of the mums affected by the scandal. Filming began last April in Cheshire.

Corby Borough Council finally admitted negligence back in 2010 after a lengthy legal battle. It dates back to the 15-year removal period of waste from the site of a former steelworks in the town. The mothers confessed they had come in contact with dirt from the clean-up process whilst pregnant, The Sun reports.

Jack Thorne, The show’s creator, discussed the new Netflix show saying: “The Corby Toxic Waste Case is one of those moments in history that is defining. It showed our ability to close our eyes and ears to the safety of our people. It also showed the remarkable way that people will fight for what’s right…

“Toxic Town tells the story of these funny, brave, incredible women and the way they scrapped for their children. It has been a true privilege working with Annabel, Minkie, Delyth and the whole Broke & Bones family on this incredible story, and we are so grateful to Netflix for giving us the opportunity and support in telling it.”
