Each year, the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) aims to seek out and celebrate the nation’s favourite fish & chip shops, and four Yorkshire fish & chip shops have been named in the top 40 shortlist for the National Fish & Chip Awards 2026.
The NFFF awards, which are seen as the Oscars for fish & chips. searches for the best fish & chip shops by looking at a range of factors, including a meticulous set of tasks, challenges and interviews covering industry awareness, product knowledge, environmental and sustainability best practices, employer responsibilities, customer service, and more.

A panel of fish and chip experts now have the tough task of assessing the shortlist of candidates for this year’s awards, ensuring that quality and industry standards are met and highlighting standout chippies that quite rightly need to be celebrated.
Now, the shortlist of 20 establishments vying for this year’s top prize has been unveiled. They cover every region of the UK and will eventually be narrowed down to a list of 10, before the winners are finally revealed in a ceremony in London in February.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which organises the annual ceremony, commented: “There’s nowhere to hide when a chippy puts itself forward for the National Fish & Chip Awards.

“The rigours of the process are designed to challenge, inspire and motivate all who take part and one of the benefits is that businesses receive direction for how to tighten up and truly be outstanding regardless of winning or not.
“Fish and chips hold such a special place in peoples’ hearts and it’s our responsibility to provide steer so that things stay that way and these fantastic 20 semi-finalists are great ambassadors for why it’s loved so much.”
