A beloved mural and local landmark has returned to a pub wall after being temporarily removed for building work. Pete McKee’s ‘The Snog, a cherished piece of art depicting an elderly couple kissing, has been a fixture on Fagan’s pub in Broad Lane, Sheffield, since 2013, delighting both residents and tourists.
The mural, featuring the couple named Frank and Joy, vanished at the end of April but was repainted by Mr McKee on Monday. This spot has become a popular place for couples to pose for photographs. While the new version closely resembles the original, there are a few subtle changes, such as the color of Joy’s coat, which has changed from brown to purple.
Mr McKee, celebrated for his vibrant depictions of everyday life in South Yorkshire, announced on Monday afternoon that his iconic couple were “back.” He explained that repainting the mural only took a day, but he had to redo it due to rain interrupting his first attempt.
The BBC reported that Mr McKee said: “It was great to get the opportunity to repaint The Snog. After gracing the wall of Fagan’s for the past 11 years, they were really starting to look their age, so a revamp was definitely in order.”
He continued: “I took the opportunity to give Joy a new hairdo and get her a new coat. The mural looks lovely and vibrant now and is set for the next 20 years – and more, hopefully.”
The pub Fagans is synonymous with the city’s music scene, and a group including Arctic Monkeys’ drummer Matt Helders took control of the pub last year. Let’s hope the mural and the pub outlive us all as a symbol of the city.
