Mo Lea discusses how when she was just 20 years old, she was attacked by Peter Sutcliffe otherwise known as the Yorkshire RIpper back in 1980 where she managed to escape with her life.
Sutcliffe, who was being held at HM Prison Frankland in Durham, was serving 20 concurrent sentences of life imprisonment for the murder of 13 women and attempting to kill seven more – between 1975 and 1980.
The serial killer, who died in November 2020 due to coronavirus, started attacking woman in the late 1960s, but his first known murder was in 1975 when he killed Wilma McCann – a 28 year-old mother from Leeds. Over the next five years, his crimes grew and it became unsafe across Yorkshire and the North West for women in some areas to go out at night alone. He came to be known as the Yorkshire Ripper.
Mo Lea featured on LADBible‘s series ‘Minutes With…’ on YouTube to discuss her encounter with Sutcliffe, opening up about surviving an attack by one of the country’s most notorious serial killers.
Lea had been to meet her friends in town for a few beers on the 25th October, 1980, as she did on regular occasions. She discusses in the video that at the time there was an atmosphere and women were encouraged not to be out alone at night.
Discussing the attack, which happened as she was heading home after been out with friends for a few drinks. She discussed how he approached her from behind in a friendly voice that made her almost feel like she knew him.
Then after feeling uneasy when she turned around to see him she made her excuses and turned to catch her bus. Then she said: “I sensed real danger, I could hear is footsteps following me. I was heading for the road, and as a walked fasted I could hear his footsteps getting faster and faster. And sheer panic took over… I was hit on the back of the head.”
“Falling to the ground I let out a scream. Fortunately, there was a young couple walking at the end of the road, right where I needed to get to, and then they saw me on the floor, and then they saw me on the floor, with this man leaning over me, wielding something, and trying to hit me repeatedly.”
Mo Lea discussing how the couple ran towards her, scaring away Peter Sutcliffe, who ran away at this point. Lea believes that if it wasn’t for them “he would’ve had his final blow”
